David Lawrence’s The Perry Brothers brings together two rabbits, traditional Somerset cider making, English folk dancing, local wildlife, and a bit of musical humor. The rabbits stand atop a box inscribed “Perry Bros., Dowlish Wake,” referring to one of Lawrence’s favorite cider farms, where cider was traditionally made and sold by the gallon from enormous oak barrels.
The apples are advertised at “10d. per bushel,” using the old British currency notation for ten pence. Another inscription, “Sweet Coppin,” carries a double meaning. Sweet Coppin is a traditional variety of cider apple, but it is also the name of a women’s clog-dancing team that frequently performed alongside Lawrence’s Morris Men.
Perched alongside the rabbits is a kingfisher, a bird native to the Somerset Levels, the distinctive wetland landscape of the part of England where Lawrence lived.
The humor continues inside the box with a traditional English meal of fish and chips. Lawrence drew inspiration from the old wartime song Run Rabbit Run, in which the rabbit is encouraged to escape the farmer and his intended fate as rabbit pie. Lawrence gives the story his own ending: forget the rabbit pie and have fish and chips instead.
As with so many of his carvings, Lawrence tucked in details identifying both the artist and the piece’s place in his body of work. The mouse holds Lawrence’s signature acorn, and The Perry Brothers was the 119th piece David Lawrence carved for Harmony Kingdom.
Produced as a Fixed Edition of 2,500, The Perry Brothers was made in England and measures approximately 2 inches high × 1.5 inches wide × 3.25 inches long.
