Krause Publications commissioned Harmony Kingdom for a second consecutive year to create an event piece for the 1999 International Collectible Expositions in Long Beach, California, and Rosemont, Illinois. Peter Calvesbert’s Swap ’n Sell captures the collector-show atmosphere with three dogs crowded around a swap-and-sell table admiring the previous year’s ICE piece, Sneak Preview.
Under the table, the ever-mischievous Mad Murphy counts his coins. The inscription “Charge P.J. Double” pays tribute to Harmony Kingdom collector Joe McLaughlin, adding the sort of personal collector-community reference for which Calvesbert’s carvings are known.
The interior delivers the final joke: Peter Calvesbert himself is splayed inside with a strategically positioned fig leaf. The edition totaled 5,000 pieces, with 2,500 available at each of the two 1999 ICE shows.
