Harmony Kingdom Rothschild TJDLRA2 David Lawrence Rabbits Archive

David Lawrence’s Rothschild combines a pair of rabbits, an extravagant parasol, Victorian romance, and a decidedly modern environmental message. In the 19th century, parasols could serve as love tokens and wedding gifts, and presenting one to a woman could signify a gentleman’s serious romantic intentions.

The piece takes its name from Bettina Rothschild, who received a particularly magnificent parasol from her fiancé. Made of silk and covered with gauze and lace, its tips were reportedly decorated with emeralds and other gems. Lawrence gives his rabbits their own ornate parasol, although their immediate concern is less romance than finding some relief from the effects of global warming.

The rabbits have enlisted several additional defenses against the heat, including ice cream and a cooler. A bottle of sunscreen marked “Kyoto Tan” refers to the Kyoto Protocol, the international agreement intended to address climate change. Another inscription, “Ward Hunt,” references the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf and its breakup, reinforcing the environmental theme woven throughout the carving.

Inside the box, Lawrence changes the scenery with a plentiful collection of leaves and nuts from a cob tree. Hidden among them is the artist’s familiar signature acorn. The engraved number “124” identifies Rothschild as the 124th box figurine David Lawrence carved for Harmony Kingdom.

Produced as a Fixed Edition of 2,500, Rothschild was made in England and measures approximately 3 inches high × 2.4 inches wide × 2.1 inches long.
