Lawrence Ahoy is a Harmony Kingdom Signature Series Limited Edition box figurine designed by David Lawrence and produced in an edition of 2,400 pieces. Released in 2004, the wonderfully detailed scene finds three cats of vaguely Scottish ancestry setting out in the Argo with their bagpipes, golf clubs, haggis and provisions.

The details reward a closer look. A bottle of David Lawrence's favored single malt, "Sheep Dip," bears the number 120, marking this as the 120th piece he carved for Harmony Kingdom. An acorn is hidden among provisions that include trout, Duerr's marmalade and Tunnock's teacakes. Four-year-old Katie Lawrence suggested the boat's name Argo, after Jason and the Argonauts, while "Nessy was here" refers to a visit from a Lawrence family cousin. Inside, the true inhabitant of the loch is revealed: Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster.

An Unusual Archive Detail

Harmony Kingdom's original information for Lawrence Ahoy states that the edition was signed and numbered by the artist. Numbered examples are known in the secondary market, including a documented example numbered 0129/2400.

The examples preserved in the Harmony Kingdom Archives are notably different. All six Archive examples currently located and examined by AtopTheTables bear David Lawrence's "DL" initials inside the lid, but none carries an edition number. The initials appear in varying locations on the flat interior surface of the lids. Their varying placement is consistent with individual application, although we cannot independently establish how the initials were applied.

We have carefully examined the interior, exterior and less-visible surfaces where edition numbers sometimes appear, and no edition number is present on any of the six Archive examples examined.

We do not know why these Archive-retained examples were left unnumbered, and we will not speculate. Their consistent difference from the normally documented signed-and-numbered production pieces, however, is an interesting characteristic of the examples retained in the company's own Archive.
