Harmony Kingdom Lakshmi Deity TJHDEL2 Ann Richmond Treasure Jest Archive

Lakshmi depicts the Hindu goddess of prosperity, purity and generosity, whose name derives from the Sanskrit “laksme,” meaning attainment. Ann Richmond’s interpretation presents Lakshmi with four arms: two holding lotus flowers, one dispensing wealth and one giving a blessing. Her two elephant companions spray her with water, while her lotus-flower throne evokes purity, beauty and the balance between worldly and spiritual prosperity.

The carving is filled with personal and symbolic details. A white owl represents Lakshmi’s all-seeing wisdom and serves as her traditional transport. The interior owl and date reference Richmond’s partner Gary’s recent graduation with a Masters in creative writing; “Moonlight” on the elephant’s rug names Richmond’s favorite local curry house; and the “L” plate on the elephant’s backside pays homage to the final shot of the 1960s cult comedy Carry On Up The Khyber.

Designed by Ann Richmond, Lakshmi was carved in 2006 and released September 28, 2006, reaching stores February 10, 2007. Made in England as a fixed edition of 500, it belongs to Harmony Kingdom’s Small Treasure Jest subset of the Treasure Jest collection.
