Collector’s Story
House Party takes its inspiration from both Harmony Kingdom’s highest dealership level, the House of Lords, and the British parliamentary chamber from which that name was borrowed. A badger, pig and fox behave like their human counterparts while also representing environmental issues confronting Britain. The badger reviews an agenda covering the foot-and-mouth epidemic before a lengthy subsidized pub lunch, while protesting the gassing of badgers. The pig sleeps off a boozy meal clutching a hot-water bottle, and the fox, joined by a pheasant beneath the badger, protests hunting.
The parliamentary bench is covered with satirical graffiti. “1852 Pugin” refers to the man who rebuilt the House of Lords, while “Iron Lady Rust in Peace” and “I ♥ Thatcher” refer to former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. “Wot no peers” jokes that peers themselves may soon become endangered, while another hunting protest appears above the number for the high-class madam “Miss Whiplash.” Peter Calvesbert’s signature mouse is tucked beneath the fox’s chin.
Inside, four snapping turtles chatter “blah blah blah,” an irreverent comment on the function of the House of Lords. This Peter Calvesbert variation is distinguished by the pig’s green hot-water bottle and the fox’s orange jacket; the Adam Binder variation instead has a purple bottle and yellow jacket. Created for the HOL Artist Signing Tour, this version was issued in an edition of 1,372.
