Harmony Kingdom Hot & Heavy Rhinoceros TJDLRH David Lawrence Archive

David Lawrence’s Hot & Heavy portrays a rhinoceros protecting her calf, using the bond between mother and offspring to introduce a serious conservation story. Rhinos produce a single calf after a gestation of roughly 15 to 18 months, and the youngster may remain with its mother for more than two years.

The carving addresses the centuries-old belief that rhinoceros horn possesses qualities of virility and potency, a superstition that contributed to relentless hunting despite legal protections. Harmony Kingdom noted that rhino horn, composed of tightly matted hair-like keratin, has been used for carvings, ceremonial knife handles, traditional medicines and supposed aphrodisiacs. The company’s characteristically pointed punch line was that the invention of Viagra might ultimately do more for rhino conservation than an international treaty.

The number “130” carved into the lip of the lid identifies Hot & Heavy as the 130th piece David Lawrence carved for Harmony Kingdom. Lawrence also said his familiar signature acorn is hidden somewhere on the piece, although this time he concealed it particularly well.
