Peter Calvesbert’s Gubbio Town was created for the 2006/2007 Royal Watch Collector’s Club theme “Pax et Bonum”, or “Peace and Goodness,” the motto of St. Francis of Assisi. Harmony Kingdom focused on Francis as the patron saint of animals and on the stories in which his unusual rapport with animals takes center stage.
This club redemption piece retells the legend of the Wolf of Gubbio. According to the story, a ferocious wolf had been terrorizing the town and attacking both people and livestock. Francis went into the hills to confront the animal, which miraculously closed its jaws and lay at his feet. Rather than destroy the wolf, Francis sought peace between predator and townspeople.
Francis led the wolf back into Gubbio and brokered an agreement: because the animal had attacked out of hunger, the citizens would feed it regularly, and in return the wolf would cease preying upon the people and their flocks. Gubbio Town turns that centuries-old story of reconciliation into a Royal Watch box figurine. The timed edition was limited to 500 pieces.
