David Lawrence’s Ganesa’s Parade leads a cheerful procession of elephants named for Ganesa, the Indian deity known as the “Lord of and Destroyer of all Obstacles” and associated with knowledge, wisdom, education, literature and the fine arts. The elephants’ raised trunks add another traditional symbol, representing good luck.

The accompanying monkeys are in a considerably less dignified mood, pelting the procession with coconuts. Their irreverence provides Lawrence’s comic counterpoint to Ganesa’s wisdom, suggesting the earth-bound foolishness of an animal rarely held up as a model of good judgment.

The interior carries a more serious conservation message: a pile of elephant tusks is marked “Not for sale,” referencing the long-standing ban on the ivory trade. Created for the 2003 House of Lords Signing Tour, Ganesa’s Parade was issued in an edition of 1,000.
