Harmony Kingdom Fragonard TJDLPI David Lawrence Pig Archive

David Lawrence’s Fragonard is a wonderfully tongue-in-cheek Treasure Jest featuring a lovelorn pig preparing for a romantic adventure. The piece takes its name from Fragonard, the famous French perfumery. Apparently concerned that the aroma of the sty might interfere with his romantic prospects, the hopeful pig has equipped himself with an impressively large bottle of fragrance.

The details reveal considerably more about his plans. In one trotter he carries the Pig Breeders’ Gazette, perhaps after consulting the personal advertisements in search of companionship, while the other holds a bouquet of roses for his prospective sweetheart. At his feet is a sack marked “Pork Scratchings,” the fried pig-skin snack traditionally found in British pubs. That detail has a personal connection to the artist: David Lawrence included it after a friend broke a tooth while eating pork scratchings during an evening at the pub.

The joke continues inside the box, where Lawrence carved a tooth along with the inscription “No Wis.” Fragonard also marks a milestone in his work for Harmony Kingdom: it was the 123rd box figurine David Lawrence carved for the company.

Produced as a Fixed Edition of 2,500, Fragonard was carved in 2003, released January 5, 2004, and reached stores March 1, 2004. Made in England, the piece measures approximately 2.4 inches high × 2 inches wide × 2.6 inches long.
