Collector’s Story

David Lawrence named Fragonard after the French perfumery. Apparently concerned that the aroma of the sty might interfere with his romantic prospects, the hopeful pig carries an impressively large bottle of fragrance.

In one trotter he holds the Pig Breeders’ Gazette, perhaps after consulting the personal advertisements, while the other carries roses for his prospective sweetheart. At his feet is a sack marked “Pork Scratchings,” the fried pig-skin snack traditionally found in British pubs.

Lawrence included that detail after a friend broke a tooth while eating pork scratchings during an evening at the pub. The joke continues inside with a carved tooth and the inscription “No Wis.” This was the 123rd box figurine David Lawrence carved for Harmony Kingdom.
