Harmony Kingdom Father Knows Best Tiger TJTT LE 2500 Peter Calvesbert Archive

Father Knows Best is Peter Calvesbert's tribute to the extinct Tasmanian Tiger, or Thylacine. The species disappeared from mainland Australia and later Tasmania under pressures that included habitat loss, hunting and disease; the last known specimen died at Hobart Zoo in 1936.

The sculpture carries an unusually rich set of references. September 7, 1936 is inscribed between the adult's forelegs, “Benjamin” recalls the name given to the last known Thylacine, and “Devil” references the Tasmanian Devil. The £3 marking represents the historic bounty for the two adults and two juveniles, while a chicken hides from the predators and Peter's mouse shelters between the pups. The base itself follows the shape of Tasmania with an arrow pointing north.

Carved in 2003 and released October 22, 2003, Father Knows Best reached stores January 1, 2004. Made in England, it was issued as a Fixed Edition of 2,500 pieces.
