Harmony Kingdom Chapeau TJDLCA9 David Lawrence Cat Archive

David Lawrence tucked a pretty black-and-white cat into a straw hat for Chapeau, using the scene to explore the traditional importance of straw in England for both hats and thatched roofs. The design reaches back to older harvesting practices in which grain stems were preserved rather than shredded by modern combines.

Inside is a traditional “corn dolly,” woven from the last harvested sheaf as a symbol of the spirit of the crop. The cryptic equation “7 ¾ + 7 ¼ = 21” records David's hat size, his wife Sue's hat size and their 21 years of marriage. Lawrence's signature acorn is concealed in the rose bouquet, and Chapeau marked his 113th carving for Harmony Kingdom.

Carved in 2003 and released May 28, 2003, Chapeau was made in England in an edition of 3,000 pieces. It reached stores September 1, 2003 as part of the Small Treasure Jest subset and was retired March 2, 2008.
