Harmony Kingdom Beau Brummell Poodle TJHO5 Peter Calvesbert Archive

Beau Brummell presents a dandified poodle gripping electric clippers and glaring as though daring anyone to trim his curls. Peter Calvesbert used the joke to recall the practical origins of traditional poodle clipping, when the breed worked in water and strategically retained hair helped protect the chest and kidneys while the tail pompom provided a useful handhold.

The piece takes its name from the celebrated Regency trendsetter Beau Brummell. On Version 1, a coded inscription around the base relates to the cipher used on Signing Line; Calvesbert indicated that the decoded message expresses his opinion about docking dogs’ ears and tails. The Infinity version removes that code. His signature mouse clings to the electrical cord between the poodle’s front paws.

Carved in 2000 and released June 1, 2000, Beau Brummell was made in England. The design was retired April 14, 2003 with an edition size of 7,824.
