Aria Amorosa was created by Peter Calvesbert and depicts two seals lovingly entwined, their mouths open as though singing together. Released in 1998 as a Small Treasure Jest, the piece had a relatively brief production life before retiring on July 1, 1998, with a final edition of 9,530 pieces.
As with many of Calvesbert's designs, the affectionate scene hides some decidedly less romantic details. A Plimsoll line with numerical markings runs down the belly of one seal, representing the amount of oil that could be extracted from an elephant seal. Beneath the other seal's flipper is a cigarette lighter, inspired by a beach-combing trip in North Wales where Calvesbert encountered numerous discarded plastic lighters.
His familiar mouse peers startled from beneath another flipper. Inside, Calvesbert carved a rat after mishearing a radio report about the Montserrat catastrophe, involving the Caribbean island's volcanic crisis, as a report about a “monster rat.”
