All the Rage, created by master carver Peter Calvesbert, depicts two Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens) in a dramatic tangle of flowing red and blue fins. Instead of their usual natural weapons, these quarrelsome fish brandish a knife and a broken bottle — Calvesbert's humorous take on human brawling.
Inside the box figurine, the same fish resolve their differences more peacefully over a game of checkers. The lid includes the scientific name Betta splendens and the inscription “Rumblefish,” recalling a late-night cinema double bill that Calvesbert attended in the 1980s, featuring David Lynch's Eraserhead and Francis Ford Coppola's Rumble Fish.
Calvesbert also drew inspiration from the history of the term “Siamese twins,” associated with Chang and Eng, the famous nineteenth-century conjoined twins from Siam who toured with P. T. Barnum. The title, spirited expressions and detailed interior give this design several layers of the artist's characteristic storytelling.
Carved in 2012 and made in England, All the Rage was released February 13, 2012, and arrived in stores March 1, 2012. It was issued as a Fixed Edition of just 200.
