From Four Pieces to an Archive: Our Harmony Kingdom Story

Our connection to Harmony Kingdom didn't begin with an auction, a warehouse or 44 boxes arriving at our door. It began much more modestly, with four pieces.

In the mid-1990s, Kelly started a very small Harmony Kingdom collection. The company itself was still in its early years, and those first four pieces introduced us to the wonderfully detailed miniature world that would eventually attract collectors around the globe.

We certainly didn't imagine then that roughly three decades later, Harmony Kingdom would return to our lives on an entirely different scale.

An Unexpected Opportunity

In August 2026, we learned that archival material from Harmony Kingdom was being offered at auction in Columbus, Ohio. For two people who had known the work since its early days, this wasn't simply another opportunity to acquire inventory for AtopTheTables.

It was a chance to preserve pieces connected directly to the history of a company whose work we had first encountered decades earlier.

We studied the auction carefully, selected the lots that interested us most, and ultimately acquired a substantial group of Harmony Kingdom material. What followed was considerably less miniature than the figurines themselves: four pallets containing 44 boxes.

Opening the Archive, One Box at a Time

When the shipment arrived, we quickly discovered that acquiring the material was only the beginning.

Each box had to be opened carefully. Individual pieces needed to be identified, inspected, photographed and compared with available records. Quantities had to be reconciled. Packaging and variations needed to be noted. Pieces that raised questions required additional research rather than assumptions.

And that work is still underway.

As we write this, approximately six of the original 44 boxes remain unopened. That means we aren't yet prepared to tell you everything contained in the material we acquired. In fact, that ongoing process of discovery has become one of the most fascinating parts of the project.

More Than Inventory

It would be easy to treat hundreds of Harmony Kingdom pieces simply as merchandise to be cataloged and sold. We decided very early that we wanted to do something more.

The circumstances of this acquisition give these pieces a documented history. Preserving that connection matters to us, particularly for collectors who care not only about the piece they own, but also about where it came from.

We have therefore been building a detailed record of the material as we work through it. Pieces are being professionally photographed and researched, and qualifying Archive pieces are accompanied by an AtopTheTables Certificate of Authenticity & Provenance documenting their connection to the Harmony Kingdom Archives acquisition.

That process takes considerably longer than simply putting an item online. We think it is worth doing.

Some Surprises Along the Way

The Archive has already reminded us why collecting can be so much fun.

We've encountered familiar production pieces as well as unusual examples, special pieces and prototypes that deserve closer examination. Sometimes the interesting detail is obvious. Other times, it takes comparing several examples or researching the history of a particular carving to understand what we're looking at.

We're deliberately resisting the temptation to provide an answer when the evidence doesn't support one. When something is known, we'll document it. When something remains uncertain, we'll say so.

And with several boxes still unopened, there may yet be a few surprises waiting for us.

From Kelly's Four Pieces to 44 Boxes

There is a certain symmetry to all of this that we couldn't have planned.

What began with Kelly collecting four Harmony Kingdom pieces in the mid-1990s has, some thirty years later, brought 44 boxes of Harmony Kingdom history through our doors.

We expect this Journal to become one of the places where we tell that story.

In future articles, we'll take closer looks at individual pieces, artists, editions, variations and discoveries from the Archive. We'll also share some of what we're learning as we research and document the collection.

For longtime Harmony Kingdom collectors, we hope it becomes a useful reference. For people encountering these remarkable little sculptures for the first time, perhaps it will provide the same sort of introduction that those original four pieces gave us all those years ago.
